Help develop a Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 - 2020

Thank you to everyone who took the time to tell us your ideas for ways council can help make it easier for people with disability to live, work, learn and visit our area.

We have reviewed all your feedback and prepared a draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 - 2020.

The law tells councils they have to write a new Plan and it has to last for 4 years. When adopted the new Plan will replace our current Disability Discrimination Act Action Plan 2009-2018.

You can have a look at both of these Plans (located in the document Library on the right):

  • The current plan "Disability Discrimination Act Action Plan 2009-2018" (to be rescinded in mid 2017); and
  • The new draft plan "DRAFT Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2020" (to be adopted in mid 2017).

The purpose of this Plan is to set out the strategies and actions council plans to deliver over the next four years, to help people with disability to have better access to council information, services and facilities.

Some of the community ideas included: more accessible (disability) toilets; auditing car parks; more picnic shelters with accessible picnic tables; and more dog off leash areas (puppy parks). Some ideas we reviewed but are unable to include such as the suggestion for an accessible ocean tidal pool - even if the practical elements such as location, disability access, parking and funding were to be resolved, the environmental impediments have been described as insurmountable.

A draft plan has been developed based on community feedback and workshops with disability organisations including the PMHC Access Sub-Committee, Ability Links, NewIDAFE, Alzheimer's Australia, Bago Magic Performance Group, Riding for Disabled, House with No Steps, Disability Advocacy NSW – Disability Information Support Hub, Hastings Aboriginal Disability & Mental Health Network, Hastings Headway, St Agnes Parish, Willing & Able and Hope Shop.

The Port Macquarie-Hastings is a great place to live, work, play and learn and we know we can do more to make sure everyone has the opportunity to participate.

Feedback about the draft Plan and ways you think Council can work with the community to continue to make our area more disability friendly are now OPEN.
