Consultation has concluded

As part of our ongoing flood management planning, we have developed a draft Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan (the Plan) to manage existing, future, and potential flood risk, and the impact this has on the community in the North Brother Mountain catchment area.

The draft Plan will be on public exhibition from 23 August until 19 September, 2021 and we invite you to have your say during that time period.

We understand that the Plan is quite technical and we invite those within (or with an interest in) the catchment area to attend one of two online community consultation sessions to find out more, hear from the experts and ask questions so that you may be better informed when providing feedback.

  • Wednesday 8 September 5.30pm - 7pm

Sessions will be held online on the free Zoom meeting platform. Registration is essential and can be done via the form at the bottom of this page.

You can view or download a copy of the Plan in the document library on this page. Due to the length of the document, it is not practical to distribute hard copies of the Plan. If you are unable to view the Plan online, please contact council on 6581 8111.

How can I make a submission?

You can provide feedback in the following ways:

  • Register to attend an information session.
  • Take our survey to provide feedback on individual priorities of the Plan.
  • Or make a submission by providing any general thoughts, ideas or concerns you may have relating to the Plan.

Feedback can also be provided by:

  • Emailing council@pmhc.nsw.gov.au
  • Posting to The Chief Executive Officer, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, PO Box 84, Port Macquarie NSW 2444.

Where is the catchment area?

There are over 2000 landowners, residents and businesses located within the catchment area and study zone; which covers the villages of Laurieton, West Haven, Lakewood, Kew and Deauville at the Base of North Brother Mountain - an approximate area of 1,852 hectares. You can view a map of the study zone in our FAQs.

What is in the Plan?

The Plan sets out recommendations for the type and timing of works and areas of high priority. The Plan will also identify gaps in our existing development planning, policy and emergency management; this may result in changes to zoning and how future development is managed in the catchment area.

This is a multi-faceted and ongoing project that encompasses community consultation, technical documentation and a series of mapping studies, reports and plans.

Why is this project important?

This project will:

  • Help us to manage existing (and potential future) flooding issues;
  • Guide us in planning for future development so that we don’t create additional flooding problems; and,
  • Ensure we meet our obligations to deliver on state government flood risk policies.

What does this mean for me?

Following the implementation of the Plan and future adoption of a Local Overland Flood Policy (one of the actions recommended by the Plan), your property may be identified as being subject to local, overland flooding. This would be listed on any documentation related to your property and you may be impacted by future changes to flood related policy and planning instruments.

Developments in areas defined as being subject to overland flooding will be required to comply with controls for flood-prone areas (still to be developed).

If recommendations for structural mitigation measures identified by the plan are adopted and implemented, you may experience a reduction in flood related impacts as improved infrastructure enables run-off to be directed more effectively away from your property.

For more information please refer to our FAQs.

NOTE – this plan aims to manage and mitigate the risks associated from Local Overland Flooding originating from the North Brother Mountain and surrounding urban catchments only. Riverine Flooding is considered separately via the Camden Haven River Flood Study and Floodplain Risk Management Plans.
