Port Macquarie Entertainment Precinct Event Use Policy

Consultation has concluded

A draft Port Macquarie Entertainment Precinct Event Use Policy has been drafted and is ready for community consultation.

Each year a number of large community events are held on the Town Green and it is important that a robust policy is in place to ensure that the community get the maximum benefit.

After reviewing the existing policy, it was decided to expand the policy in place for the Town Green to include the following areas: Town Green, Town Square, Hay Street Forecourt, Clarence Street from Hay Street to Short Street, Short Street from Clarence Street to Town Green

The purpose of this policy is to:
  • provide guidance to the community and other users on appropriate uses of the Port Macquarie Entertainment Precinct
  • to provide fair and equitable use of the space by all sectors of the community
  • generate activation of public spaces within the entertainment precinct

Major events such as Tastings on Hastings, IRONMAN 70.3 and the Blues and BBQ Festival added some of the driving force behind a recent review of the rules and regulations governing the use of Port Macquarie’s Town Green area.

Following the recent public exhibition of the Town Green Masterplan, the need was identified to update the ways in which Council managed the use of public spaces in the CBD, particularly those areas where public events were held and celebrations occurred.

At tonight’s ordinary meeting, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council decided it was then prudent to adopt the draft Port Macquarie Entertainment Precinct Event Use Policy to ensure the policy remained apace with how the Town Green was and will be used into the future.

Other than the Town Green, the draft policy document also covers the Town Square, Hay Street Forecourt, Clarence Street from Hay to Short Streets and Short Street from Clarence Street to the Town Green.

When adopted the draft policy will supercede the Town Green Protocol Policy.

Council’s Director Infrastructure and Asset Management Jeffery Sharp said the draft policy would go on public exhibition from 17 October 2014 through to 14 November 2014 and members of the public were welcome to make formal submissions.

“The draft policy aims to provide guidance around Council’s desire for activation of public spaces by a range of different users in a way that is balanced and provides positive outcomes for the whole community,” Mr Sharp said.

“Council also recognises that the policy must be supported by good management practices and simpler approval processes.”
