Interpretation Policy and Guidelines

Council recognises and acknowledges the important social, historical and cultural significance of interpretation in telling the story of our place and us.

Currently across our region we have a diverse range of interpretation in the form of signage, memorials, plaques, panels and more. To date there has not been a central council business unit that has managed or assessed community requests for interpretation or recognition. This has resulted in a plethora of interpretation across the region is a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and themes and content, in various states of repair and whose content may be aged or outdated.

The Interpretation Policy & Guidelines will streamline application and assessment processes and allow for clear and consistent decision-making and impartiality on future interpretation in the region.

Interpretation Review Panel

Council would like to invite suitable experienced community members to nominate to volunteer for the inaugural Interpretation Review Panel. The key function of the Panel is to assess all interpretation applications and accompanying documentation tabled at Interpretation Review Panel meetings. The Panel will assess proposed applications against all criteria in Section 1 & 2 of the Interpretation Guidelines.

Successful applications will be ratified by the Panel, with the Chairperson to provide final approval and sign the completed documentation. Successful applications will be endorsed by Council with a Letter of Support, enabling applicants to pursue funding options.

Membership Expressions of Interest

Expressions of Interest are now invited from community members with an interest in Interpretation and demonstrated experience in one or more professional fields relevant to landscape design, cultural development, architecture, planning and development. Membership is voluntary.

Panel Meetings

As a new function of Council, it is anticipated that in the first year of operation, three Panel meetings will be convened to assess applications. Where necessary, it may be required to convene out of session meetings for urgent applications.
