Town Green / Town Square Development

Aerial view of Town Green and Town Square

The northern end of Horton St and Town Green East will soon benefit from major facelifts, with preliminary works starting in the coming week (commencing March 20th 2017).

The project will see the construction of a new Town Square (at the northern end of Horton St) and Stage 1 of an upgrade to the Town Green to ensure these spaces meet future community needs. This will result in more vibrant and useable spaces for the many events, experiences and activities that occur and to see these spaces act as major drawcards for locals and visitors.

During works there will be restricted vehicle access to the Town Square loop, with additional disabled parking being provided in Clarence Street. Pedestrian access and access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

Further construction on the new Town Square is expected to commence in June, with specific timing to be confirmed once a construction contractor has been engaged.

The development of the new Town Square is a Town Centre Master Plan (TCMP) project, funded through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD. The TCMP is also contributing funds towards the Town Green upgrade.

Community engagement for the Town Centre Master Plan (including Town Square and Town Green) occurred and was completed in 2014.

Mature tree specimens will replace the old trees, allowing for clear views to the river from Clarence Street and to provide extra shade.

In addition, removable bollards will be installed to allow for the square to be easily transformed into a vehicle free pedestrian plaza for events, markets and festivals.

During the works pedestrian access to all businesses will be maintained, with vehicles having restricted access to the Town Square loop. Disabled parking will be relocated to Clarence Street for the duration of the work.

Work is expected to be completed prior to the busy Christmas holiday period in mid-December this year (subject to favourable weather conditions and unforseen delays).

To allow for the implementation of the new design, existing trees will be removed and replaced with established trees, new turf and irrigations systems.

A new, wider 5 metre concrete path along the foreshore will provide a more comfortable and accessible link between Lady Nelson Wharf and the breakwall, and new lighting and seating will create a more usable and relaxing space.

The sea wall will also be rejuvenated, with 2,500 tonnes of new rock being brought in to protect the area. Stormwater upgrades will occur and the existing power and lighting will be replaced to make the area more appealing.

Pedestrian access between the Town Square and breakwall will be maintained, however the community are asked to exercise caution as the works take place.

Works are scheduled for completion in November this year, subject to favourable weather and unforeseen delays.
