Port Macquarie Airport

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has developed a detailed concept for a $9.875 million upgrade for the Port Macquarie Airport Terminal Building.

The current terminal building was constructed in 1994, and the upgrade is required to cater for increased passenger numbers, to improve the standard of current facilities, and provide an improved airport experience that is consistent with other regional airports.

The upgrade will double the existing floor space, increase service capability and provide a more contemporary, comfortable and efficient facility for passengers and other airport visitors.

New amenities will be provided and there will be significant changes to enable ‘back of house’ operations to function more efficiently. Additional elements include new air conditioning, baggage reclaim services, upgrades to flight check-in and departure areas and retail facilities. The electrical supply will also be upgraded and a new reticulated sewer system installed.

The existing airport building operates at capacity during peak periods, with the current departure lounge being added as a temporary facility in 2008 and only accommodating a maximum of 100 people. With the upgrade this capacity will increase to approximately 300 people, and the expanded building provides the opportunity for further development under the new roof area should this be required in the future.

The upgrade to the terminal building follows a ‘strategic concept’ that was developed in late 2016 to support grant applications. Council were subsequently successful in receiving $5 million in State Government funding through the Restart NSW Program and $1.25 million in Australian Government funding through the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development Community Development Grants. Council will contribute $ 3.625 million to the upgrade through the Airport Reserve.
