Community engagement on this proposal has concluded

Port Macquarie Hastings Council has a role in addressing community issues regarding alcohol consumption. It follows a Council resolution in December 2007 to establish an Alcohol-Free Zone within the Central Business District (CBD) and a further request in 2014 to undertake a review and the extension of alcohol free zones.

The Alcohol-Free Zone expired in December 2018. Council is seeking to re-establish an Alcohol-Free Zone for a further four years (from October 2019 to October 2023) in line with current standards and guidelines.

The objectives of the Alcohol Free Zone are to:

  • Create a safe enjoyable evening environment;
  • Create a diverse night economy not reliant on licensed premises trading;
  • Ensure the Local Government Area entertainment areas are safe and inviting;
  • Reduce alcohol related violence;
  • Reduce the level of malicious damage;
  • Reduce the level of disorderly conduct;
  • Advocate for licensed premises ongoing compliance with Responsible Service of Alcohol obligations; and
  • Maintain public perception of a safe regional city.

The zone boundaries are defined in the AFZ Map and are:

  • East from Buller Street Bridge to Murray Street (including Short, Horton and Hay Streets and Keena, Barracks and Phillips Lane).
  • North from the top end of Gordon Street through to Sunset Parade (including Clarence, William and Hayward Streets).
