Consultation has concluded at midnight on Mon 17 June 2024

At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 16 May 2024, Council resolved to put the Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy on public exhibition no later than Monday 27 May 2024 for a minimum of 28 days.

Council’s current waste strategy expires this year, being valid from 2017-2024. In forming the new strategy, there has been consideration of many aspects, these include:

  • The current state of Council waste processes, assets and infrastructure
  • Targets set within the NSW Waste & Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 – Stage 1: 2021-2027 (released in 2021)
  • Council’s Community Strategic Plan Imagine 2050
  • Council’s Infrastructure Strategy 2022-2042
  • Council’s Long Term Energy Strategy
  • Learnings from recent events (natural disasters and declared emergencies)

The analysis looked at the current waste situation within the Local Government Area and proposes a future state situation for Council, considering all the relevant internal and external influences. It then outlines the key focus areas and an action plan to guide us into the future.

The actions are based on specific targets outlined in the document to utilise opportunities for improvement and work to meet the Council’s strategic objectives.

The strategy has a 10-year period, but the initial focus is on the details for the first 5 years.

The key focus areas are:

  1. Avoid and reduce waste
  2. Recover resources
  3. Protect the environment
  4. Manage and collaborate

The Strategy looks to ensure that Council is looking to the future, catering for the needs of the LGA while minimising the impact of waste management, and working towards increased resource recovery and building toward a circular economy.
