In 2001 greater Port Macquarie was named the NSW 4th City of the Arts.

Following this an Arts and Cultural Development Committee was established with a key role of supporting and lobbying for cultural projects including the Glasshouse, Aquasculpture and FreshArt. This group was supported within Council by the Cultural Officer

In 2008 the Museums Committee and the Heritage Committee were combined to form the Museums and Heritage Committee. The purpose of this group included raising community awareness of heritage and act as a reference group for council in regard to heritage and museums. This committee was supported in Council by the Heritage Officer.

In 2009 the Heritage Officer and Cultural Planner positions at council were made redundant. The two committees continued to meet, however the lack of specific Council officer to support the groups has resulted in both groups not having a representative to assist in actioning ideas.

Given the importance of the role these groups provide, Council has recommended that they be amalgamated and supported by the newly appointed Community Development Officer (Heritage & Culture).
