Improvement to Lake Road, Port Macquarie

Register to keep up to date with planned improvements to Lake Road.

Lake Road

Changes to Jindalee Roundabout

Lake Road has a poor crash history and is one of the most critical road links in Port Macquarie. Following the recent works to the Blackbutt and Lake Road Roundabout, Council has continued to review and receive feedback about further improvements to Lake Road.

Feedback about the intersection of Lake Road and Jindalee Road has led to work being planned to improve traffic movements through this intersection. Lake Road is busy and after considering a range of time frames to undertake this work, January has been identified as having less traffic. Work is set to commence on Monday 9 January and will take approximately 4 weeks to complete.

During this work, detour and directional signage will be in place with access for businesses and residents maintained to minimise disruption. Please exercise caution and follow traffic control signage to ensure personal safety.

Note: Due to the nature of the work to be done, it is not possible to do this work as 'night work;.

Council appreciates the continued patience of the community and surrounding businesses as these important works are progressed.

Please allow a little extra time and continue to support businesses in the area - all of which will remain accessible during the works. We recommend that residents who are looking to use Lake Road to transit between the Oxley Highway and Ocean Drive only, should consider alternate routes.

  • What is being done to ease traffic congestion along Lake Are and at the Lake Rd / Oxley Highway roundabout? Won't roadworks and a new roundabout on Lake Rd only make traffic flows worse?

Chris Livingston asked over 3 years ago

    Thanks for your questions Chris.

Council has prepared a detailed design to create two lanes of traffic in each direction of Lake Road, from the Oxley Highway to Fernhill Road. This will be a costly construction and the budget will need to be included in future Operational Plans.

The current work has been 50% funded through the Australian Government Black Spot funding. The new roundabout and other works will not necessarily improve congestion but it will improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians.

The Oxley Hwy/Lake Road roundabout is under the control of the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). At this stage RMS have no plans for an upgrade of the roundabout however they continually plan for future requirements

RMS will next week commence works to upgrade the Oxley Hwy/Wrights Road roundabout.

  • What action has been taken in regard to the turtles that inhabit the creek that crosses Lake Road close to the Salvation Army op shop?

Turtleman asked over 3 years ago

    Thanks for your question Turtleman.

The Lake Road and Blackbutt Road Roundabout works will not affect the creek crossing underneath Lake Road.

The extent of the works finishes west of the creek with no impact expected on the creek or the turtles. Erosion and sediment controls will be installed as part of the road works to minimise environmental impact of the works on local waterways.
