Consultation has concluded

In commemoration of Reconciliation Week 2022, we are calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) in the design of a contemporary First Nation’s mural that will be painted onto a retaining wall on the southern side of Port Macquarie’s Town Beach.

The project is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists/designers who reside in the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area or have a strong connection to this place. Artists/designers should consider a simple, striking design that can be easily transferred along the approximately 70-metre long retaining wall along Charlie Uptin Walk.

In consultation with Council’s Inclusion Team, the successful applicant will be required to work with invited local high school students and a select number of community members to help paint some aspects of the mural. Please factor that into your design, i.e. consider some areas of your design that can be painted by potential unexperienced artists.

There are two options to consider when applying for this project:

  1. Design only $5,000 +GST
Design a site-specific artwork (using the supplied templates) for the specified retaining wall on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk. If your design is selected, you will be paid for your design only. Another artist/s will then be engaged to paint your design onto the retaining wall.
  2. Design and install $15,000 +GST
Design a site-specific artwork using the supplied templates for the specified retaining wall on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk and with the assistance of Council staff, coordinate the painting of the mural onto the project site. The applying artist/designer must demonstrate that they have the experience to complete the mural to a professional standard or the willingness to partner with an experienced mural artist.

To apply

  • Review the Artwork Brief to understand the scope and timeline of this project
  • Complete the below EOI form and attach your proposed design
    • Provide the theme, story or meaning behind your design and how it links to the location at Town Beach or the Coastal Walk - maximum 1 x A4 page.
    • If applying to design and install the painted mural, include information on experience producing murals/public artworks, or willingness to collaborate with an experienced mural artist to install.
    • Upload up to 10 examples of previous artwork, especially any public artwork or murals.
  • Attend a site briefing at 11am Friday 25 March 2022

Expressions of interest will be closing 11:59 pm Tuesday 11 April 2022.Successful applicants will be notified the week of 18 April 2022.
