As part of the Port Macquarie Hastings Community Inclusion and Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2025-2029, we are trialing accessible, mobile matting at Town Beach to create a firmer pathway across the sand and provide equitable access for people living with disability, those who have mobility limitations or temporary injuries as well as families with prams.

What is beach matting?

The matting is a temporary, mobile access pathway installed on the beach surface to make it easier to move across soft sand, particularly for people using mobility aids, people with limited mobility, or anyone who finds sand difficult to navigate.

About the trial

The aim of the trial is to test how the matting performs in real beach conditions, including installation, safety and operational risks, storage, and quick removal during high tide or stormy weather.

This four-week trial reflects Council’s commitment to ensuring people can access and use public spaces with comfort, safety and dignity.

Core beach operations will continue as usual and our lifeguards will continue to focus on keeping everyone safe.
