Under this new policy can I request a memorial or commemorative plaque for a deceased loved one in a Council park or reserve?

No, however, in exceptional circumstances as determined only by formal resolution of Council, a private memorial or commemorative naming may be approved. The individual would have undertaken an extraordinary contribution to the community.

What happens if I place a memorial in a park or reserve without approval?

Any memorials placed in Council parks and reserves without prior approval will be removed.

Will my memorial or plaque be kept in the park indefinitely?

No, Council does not guarantee that previously approved plaques or memorials will be kept indefinitely. If a memorial is vandalised, damaged, removed or falls off it will not be replaced. Additionally, when assets (such as park furniture) reach the end of their life, plaques will be retained by Council for 12 months for the owner to collect.

What should I do if I want to place a memorial in a cemetery or on private land?

This policy does not cover memorials placed in cemeteries, private land, or privately owned buildings. If you wish to place a memorial in these areas, you will need to consult the relevant landowner/s or authorities.
