The draft Kooloonbung Creek Flying-fox Camp Management Plan provides Port Macquarie-Hastings Council with a framework for managing community impacts associated with flying-foxes roosting along Kooloonbung Creek, whilst ensuring flying-foxes and their ecological services are conserved.

The objectives of this plan are to:

  • manage community impacts and concerns associated with the camp
  • improve community resilience to flying-fox impacts
  • identify suitable management actions and where these will occur
  • ensure management actions are consistent with legislative responsibilities
  • ensure flying-fox welfare during works
  • conserve flying-fox habitat in suitable locations.

The Kooloonbung Creek flying-fox camp is mainly occupied by grey-headed flying-fox, and at times by black flying-fox and the highly transient little red flying-fox.

All flying foxes are protected under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. The grey-headed flying-fox is listed as Vulnerable under Commonwealth legislation, affording it additional protection. Management of flying foxes or their habitat must be in line with the Australian Government’s “Referral guideline for management actions in grey-headed and spectacled flying fox camps” and the “Draft Recovery Plan for the Grey-headed Flying fox Pteropus poliocephalus”.

The Kooloonbung Creek Flying-fox Camp Management Plan is in final draft form and we are seeking your feedback on this document which is available for download via the library at right of this page (or below if viewing on a mobile device).
